Welcome to the Dispatch

TakingITGlobal's theme for the month of June is Environment and Urbanization, an important topic in a world which is becoming increasingly urbanized, often with drastic environmental implications. It has been projected that soon over half of the world's population will live in urban areas, making our species a largely urban one for the first time in our history. This unprecedented change in our global society brings with it new issues related to growing urban populations, and expanding urban landscapes. Pollution, slums, health, urban sprawl, sustainability; these are just some of the issues related to this month's theme which can be discussed and explored throughout the TakingITGlobal network.

World Environment Day

On June 5 TakingITGlobal celebrated World Environment Day. The theme for this years World Environment Day was 'Melting Ice: A Hot Topic?' This theme focused on climate change, specifically the effect of climate change on our environment and our lives. It is an issue that is gaining in importance all over the world. It is being discussed everywhere from elementary school classrooms to the recent G8 summit in Germany.

E-Card Extravaganza!

E-Card Extravaganza! TakingItGlobal is launching a new, re-vamped e-Card section! The e-card page has been given a fun new design, along with some great new features: You can now create and send e-cards in multiple languages. Also the new e-card page will store any e-cards you've received, as well as ones you've sent. And the new e-card page will keep track of the most frequently sent e-cards, so you can see the most popular designs. In celebration of this momentous occasion we are having an e-Card contest!

We will be giving a wireless optical mouse as a prize for the 3 members whose e-card design submissions are the most popular on our site this month. Be sure and check out the new e-card page, while you're there you can submit your own design for the contest, and send it to your friends!

Consumerism and Pollution

Consumerism and Pollution Sometimes we buy new goods without paying attention to whether we really need them or not. We don't look at how long they might last, which country they come from or the environmental consequences of manufacturing these goods and how they are disposed. Creating new goods means new factories that need to be built whose operations can create many things that are harmful to our environment. See how other TIG members express artistically what "Consumerism and Pollution" means to them.

What Are Your Thoughts on Child Labour?

What Are Your Thoughts on Child Labour? More than 200 million children in the world today are involved in child labour, doing work that is damaging to his or her mental, physical and emotional development. Children work because their survival and that of their families depend on it. Child labour persists even where it has been declared illegal. For this issue of Panorama we ask you to submit articles related to topic of Child Labour. Here are some ideas you might like to think about:

1. Employing a child in hazardous conditions is worse than employing an adult in hazardous conditions. Do you agree?
2. In places where child labour exists, should children be paid the same as adults?
3. Much of the food and drink we consume is produced by child labour in agriculture. What are your thoughts on this?

Please feel free to submit articles on any other ideas you might think of.
