Through the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, the United Nations brought into being the first international document recognizing human rights as the foundation of peace, justice and freedom in the world. Event: World Population Day 2008 Today, July 11th the world observed U.N. World Population Day. The theme of World Population Day 2008, "Family Planning: It's a Right; Let's Make it Real". Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, Executive Director of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, commemorated the day by stating that family planning "is essential to women's empowerment and gender equality.
