Each day, we learn about the world through the lens of a camera or the pen of a journalist. Our
very perceptions of reality are filtered through the media. The media, in print, audiovisual, and
electronic forms, is the power to communicate, a power that is vital to human society.
“Make the Media” encourages you think about how to harness and utilize this power for yourself. How
can media be a form of personal expression? What does it mean to be a producer of media, rather than being
a passive consumer? How can you help other people to discover your world?
Visit http://d.takingitglobal.org/themes/media to participate in “Make the Media,” and contribute to the
TakingITGlobal “Wall of Expression”! The “Wall of Expression” is an exploration into the collective minds
of TIG members and a spontaneous work of art. Upload words and images that inspire you, and watch them
come together to form a collage with the inspirations of other members!
~*~ 3. Understanding the Issues ~*~

mid-October. This section consists of informational units on ten major global issues, with concise background
information, statistics, analysis, and links to organizations that are actively dealing with these issues.
“Understanding the Issues” is a comprehensive resource for teachers and students alike, providing TIG with a
depth of knowledge.

~*~ 4. “The Power of Media”: October’s Global Gallery Contest ~*~
Imagine a billboard at the busiest intersection in the biggest city in the world. Every day, millions of
people walk by and see it. This billboard has the power to communicate, connect, open minds, change opinions,
and plant seeds for positive action.
This billboard is a form of media: the means through which most of our opinions and perceptions of reality
are filtered as we discover the world through the pen of a journalist, or the lens of a camera. Media shapes
society in ways that are often subtle, but always profound. An important example of this is how media is used
and controlled in democratic versus dictatorial regimes.
Now imagine that you have the opportunity to put a creative advertisement for a social issue on this
billboard. Your advertisement can be for a global, national, or local issue that you think more people should
know about. What would your advertisement promote? What would your advertisement look like? What would your
advertisement express?

~*~ 5. I3 Zine Featured Article ~*~
Zuhra Bahman’s article,“Media: From the East to the West,” is October’s “Make the Media” Featured Article.
The mainstream media, as the primary source of information for many, has a strong responsibility to society. Zuhra,
a native of Afghanistan, describes how the media has sometimes shirked this responsibility in their coverage of her
country’s conflicts, and describes her own experiences of using the media as a chance to “inform, educate and empower
people.”
