~*~ 2. Monthly Theme: Education and Learning ~*~
Education is a fundamental right for every person and the key to other human rights;
the heart of all development and the essential prerequisite for equality and lasting peace. This
month, we address this key issue and discuss factors that can be implemented to improve our educational
systems.
Visit the education and learning theme page and share your thoughts:

~*~ 3. Have Your VOICE heard! ~*~
TakingITGlobal will be launching a new weekly newsletter on Youth & the UN!
This newsletter will be distributed to embassies, UN agencies, and others once the 58th UN
General Assembly session starts in mid-September. This newsletter will contain views/perspectives from
TIG members on important current affairs and topics to be discussed during the General Assembly.
If you have ideas you want to share and would like to be featured in one or more of the upcoming
newsletters, please email Beenash Jafri: beenash@takingitglobal.org
~*~ 4. Global Gallery: The Learning Curve ~*~
For this month's theme of Education & Learning, the Global Gallery will be running a contest,
entitled "The Learning Curve". Education can mean the difference between freedom and oppression, access
and restriction, knowledge and ignorance. What does education LOOK like to you? What does education MEAN
to you? Show us through your artwork!
A Hewlett Packard scanner, printer, or camera will go to the creator of the winning piece of
artwork that best depicts the spirit of education. Also, this submission, along with 4 runners-up, will
have their artwork exhibited on a TakingITGlobal postcard, which is sent to country team members and
mentors all over the world. These 5 winners will each receive 20 of these postcards and 1 TakingITGlobal
mouse pad.
All artwork that is entered into the contest will be voted on by your fellow TakingITGlobal
members based on visual appeal, style, effort, originality and relevance to the topic.
"The Learning Curve" contest will run from September 1 to September 22 and you must be under
the age of 30 to participate.

~*~ 5. I3 Zine Featured Article: Education in India ~*~
Nandita Saikia from India has written an engaging article, "Education and Learning" about
the inequities in the country's educational system. After independence from British rule, India has been
struggling to "widen the reach and quality of education". Read Nandita's article:

~*~ 6. Online Chat: The Educational System ~*~
Many debates have begun on whether the current educational system is appropriate for our
present situation. Most people are questioning the effectiveness of theoretical education when compared
to a more practical approach to learning. Others focusing their debates on the cost of schools. Education
is supposedly a fundamental right, yet remains unaccessible to people in many countries. Join this month's
chat and share your thoughts on the educational system and its effectiveness.
Is Today's Education System Effective?
- How appropriate is the current education system in your country for your current situation?
- Are schools educating or just passing students?
- Is education in Third World countries on par with education in the First World?
- How do you ensure that your education is worth the cost, especially if you are in university?
