What is the World Urban Forum?
The World Urban Forum was established by the United Nations to examine one of the most pressing issues facing the world today: rapid urbanisation and its impact on communities, cities, economies and policies. The World Urban Forum is a biennial gathering that is attended by a wide range of partners, from non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations, urban professionals, academics, to governments, local authorities and national and international associations of local governments. It gives all these actors a common platform to discuss urban issues in formal and informal ways and come up with action-oriented proposals to create sustainable cities.
Why is WUF important to young people?
It is projected that in the next fifty years, two-thirds of humanity will be living in towns and cities. Half of these will be young people. Youth are directly affected by key issues concerning urban development ranging from safety and security, access to water, environmental sustainability to violence, improving the livelihoods of slum dwellers and fostering education for all. At the same time young people are ideally positioned to positively and actively affect processes of urban development and to:
1) address the practical applications of policy-making and planning concerning the preservation and design of urban environments, such as creating-safe spaces for play, recreation, relationship-building and capacity building;
2) educate peers on safety, health and wellness related matters, including issues of crime prevention, food security, and unemployment
3) monitor and improve local access to natural resources and municipal infrastructures, including developing richer green spaces, responding to the impact of pollution and waste management and preserving sustainable energies.
How can young people get involved?
Young people can get involved with the WUF in numerous ways. By contributing their voice to the WUF as a policy process, by leading positive initiatives within their communities and by sharing their knowledge and expertise with others.
